What We Do...

Person-centred

Our person-centred approach is, at all times, working to maintain the Rogerian “core conditions” of:

  • Empathy – we strive to understand the world from our client’s perspective. To understand the client’s experience “as if” it was our own.
  • Unconditional positive regard – we strive to create an environment of genuine acceptance where clients can explore their own thoughts without fear of judgement.  Ironically, accepting people as they are is the very thing that motivates them to change.
  • Congruence – signifies the alignment between an individual's self-perception and their actual thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. The therapist's genuine expression of emotions and thoughts creates a trusting atmosphere that encourages clients to also be authentic. This harmony fosters authenticity and self-awareness, contributing to personal growth and psychological well-being

Non-pathologizing

In order to study symptoms, researchers first need to define or “operationalize” them. This scientific process is powerful, unfortunately it’s often misunderstood. Many people seem to conflate these scientific definitions with how they view themselves. A person meets criteria for a disorder and interpret that diagnosis as a fact about themselves. The label becomes a prophecy.

A statement like, “I am depressed” is a global, it suggests “depression is what I am!”. The label is global rather than nuanced, the finality of the statement does not account for the whole person or motivate them to find the inner capacity to heal, learn and grow. For this reason, our approach deemphasizes diagnostic categories within counselling sessions. Our clients are seen as individuals and not as categories of symptoms.

Evidence Based

  • Utilizing a wide variety of evidence-based strategies we create individualised treatment plans and intervention strategies based on client need, personal goals and values.
  • Our approach rests upon the assumption of human beings as evolved social primates and understands human behaviour through the lens of evolutionary psychology.
  • Our Person-Centred approach maintains a particular emphasis on issues related to the sense of meaning and purpose in life.
  • Typically, sessions utilize interventions informed by DBT, CBT and ACT.
  • We also utilize a variety of other methods including informed by psycho-dynamics, Narrative therapy, Brief Solution focussed therapy, motivational interviewing, EFFT, Red Path, Exposure therapy and Logo therapy.

Individual Services

Counselling is not a “magic fix”, instead the process requires a collaboration between therapist and client. It requires effort, honesty and courage, personal growth can be quite difficult. In therapy we learn to confront those difficulties head on and strategize how to overcome them.

  • Complete a course of treatment (typically 8 to 12 sessions) designed to foster personal growth, self-awareness and the autonomy to maintain those positive changes independently.
  • Complete focussed 60 min. individual therapy sessions (typically on a weekly basis).
  • Collaborate with clients to create individualized treatment plans, treatment goals and measure success. based on client’s needs, strengths and self-determined goals.

Couples Counselling

In couples counselling the general concept is consistent with individual services with some important differences.

  • The “client” is viewed as the relationship between the couple (as opposed the individuals engaged in therapy).
  • Each member of the couple requires the desire to move forward together and the willingness to negotiate.
  • The couple is willing to identify and enact mutually agreed upon goals to (i.e. we both want our marriage to work. We’ve come to therapy because neither of us know how improve).

Family Counselling
